Match Recap

New York City FC concluded its 2026 MLS regular-season campaign with a trip to D.C. United on Decision Day.

Although the Pigeons could no longer qualify for the playoffs, there was still plenty to play for in the season finale. Head Coach Pascal Jansen named a strong side, with Brazilian duo Luighi and Talles Magno leading the attack.

Neither side took the initiative in the opening five minutes, but United fashioned the first real chance in the eighth minute through JoĂ£o Peglow. The Brazilian intercepted a pass from Keaton Parks and forced a good save from Matt Freese.

Parks nearly broke the deadlock himself a minute later. A delightful flick from Luighi sent him through from six yards, but Parks could only steer his effort just wide of the post.

Luighi forced a save from Jordan Farr in the 21st minute after a brilliant run forward gave him the chance to shoot. The visitors were gaining momentum, and Talles Magno tested Farr twice more, in the 22nd and 26th minutes.

The final chance of the half fell to Kevin O’Toole, whose effort from distance was blocked by Oscar Avilez in stoppage time.

Jansen made one change at halftime, replacing Parks with Jonny Shore. The hosts tried to break the deadlock early in the second half through Kimito Nono, but his effort sailed over the bar.

NYCFC responded through Talles Magno, who found space after a brilliant switch of play from FernĂ¡ndez Mercau isolated him against his defender. Magno created room to shoot and flashed an effort across goal.

A second change followed on the hour mark, with AgustĂn Ojeda replacing Hannes Wolf.

Nathan Ordaz tried to inject energy into United’s attack with an effort from distance that Freese saved comfortably. Andre Dozzell then forced another save from Freese before Peglow fired over after the visitors failed to clear a low cross into the box.

A Brazilian linkup nearly gave NYCFC the breakthrough at the other end. Talles Magno played Luighi in, but the forward could not convert from a tight angle.

Jansen made another double substitution in the 69th minute, introducing Max Murray and Bénie Traoré for Thiago Martins and Luighi.

Traoré almost made an immediate impact, heading O’Toole’s delivery toward goal, but his effort flew just wide, with Talles Magno unable to get a touch.

In the 78th minute, a long throw-in led to a deep cross that Nicola Markovic headed just wide of Freese’s post from close range.

At the other end, Jonny Shore drove forward through the middle and tried his luck from distance. His effort took a deflection but did not trouble Farr.

TraorĂ© then had another chance to put NYCFC in front, but Farr kept out his header. FernĂ¡ndez Mercau also went close, sending an effort into the side netting at the near post.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 87th minute after a blistering counterattack. The move began with D.C. on the attack, but a brilliant block from Tayvon Gray and a sharp turn and run from Traoré sent NYCFC away on a three-on-one break.

Traoré fed Talles Magno down the left, and the Brazilian cut inside before expertly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

That strike would prove to be decisive as it confirmed a 1-0 victory for New York City FC in their final outing of the 2026 season.
