New York City FC travel to Inter Miami CF on Wednesday evening, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30PM ET.
Here are the Keys to the Match, presented by Ford.
Road Test
The second game of a three-match week sees the Boys in Blue hit the road once again, heading south to the Sunshine State.
With six games of the regular season to go, it’s a crucial period for Pascal Jansen’s men, who face the reigning MLS Cup Champions in midweek, before hosting LAFC at Citi Field on Saturday night.
New York have tallied four wins on the road in 2026 - their most recent away triumph also marking their last league victory: September’s 2-0 success against Real Salt Lake. Since then, the Pigeons have picked up one point from their three games with the 2-2 draw against Atlanta United, falling to a 2-1 defeat at the Chicago Fire last time out.
Snapping that streak in Miami will be no easy feat, but the chance to lock horns with some of the league’s star players should provide plenty of motivation to produce a statement performance.
With the Pigeons currently sitting outside the playoff places, the Boys in Blue have no choice but to rise to the challenge, ready to return to winning ways and reignite their postseason push.
Onto Miami
New York will certainly head into the clash eager to bounce back from Saturday’s Soldier Field setback.
Despite heading into halftime a goal to the good and with a man advantage, the visitors surrendered their lead ten minutes after the restart before an unfortunate late defensive error handed the hosts the win - a result the Head Coach admitted ‘hurt more than usual.’
As the race for a playoff spot heats up, Jansen acknowledged the importance of a rapid response, and called upon his side to rally quickly, using their frustrations to fuel a final charge.
“We’ll focus and reset ourselves in order to be ready to compete with Miami, which is a massive game obviously, given the position we’re in and what we’re fighting for,” Jansen said.
“For us, going forward, in any of the remaining six games, [it’s about] realizing the urgency we have to have in our game, which unfortunately wasn’t there in the second half [against Chicago] - but is something that has to be on point for the remaining games - not only against Miami.”
Firepower
A key positive from Saturday’s clash in the Second City was the return of last season’s leading Club goalscorer Alonso Martínez to the starting line-up. The Costa Rican forward was named in the XI for the first time since the 2025 playoffs - and his comeback could not be more timely. Though he will have been disappointed not to have found the net in Chicago, he will be hungry to bolster his side’s firepower.
Miami, meanwhile, have been prolific at the sharp end of the pitch, leading the MLS scoring charts with 68 goals in 28 games. Boasting an array of attacking talent, the Herons sit in second spot in the Eastern Conference and further boosted their scoring tally with a 4-0 win over D.C. United last time out.
No prizes for guessing the names on the scoresheet, as Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez each bagged a brace for Cristian González’s side. Registering a goal contribution in each of the last 11 games for his club, Messi is perched atop the MLS Golden Boot standings with 23 goals in 25 league appearances this term, as well as 13 assists - tied with compatriot and club teammate Rodrigo de Paul.
The league’s 2025 top scorer and two-time MVP is never far from the headlines, and the Argentine ace has been the talk of the soccer world once again, having played his final game for his country last week, signing off his La Albiceleste career with a goal and two assists, before returning to MLS action with his D.C. double.
Although Miami are among the favorites to defend their playoff crown, the victory over The Black-and-Red marked only their second win in their last 11 league games and their fifth home success of the season. Wednesday’s encounter nevertheless presents a stern test for New York - and returning to the Five Boroughs with a positive result would send a strong message of their end-of-season intent.
